Feeling Good
Edited by Leslie Hoffman

Beauty
Chanel Spring collection
For spring, the Chanel ready-to-wear collection delighted and surprised the fashion world with its presentation of clothes in a barnyard setting, a “down on the farm” approach. The clothes look just as at home in a natural setting as they do in an urban environ. The cosmetics collection designed by Peter Philips, global creative director of Chanel Makeup emphasizes this fresh, vernal vibe, with soft beiges and browns. Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eye Shadow, $56, Rouge Allure Luminous Satin Lip Color, $32, and Le Vernis Nail Colour, $23. Nordstrom, 412.548.4300. Macy’s, 412.630.4040. Chanel.

Designer Profile: Doncaster’s Patricia Clyne
The collection Doncaster is a favorite of many career-driven, style-savvy women in Pittsburgh. The designs are well-made and exude a couture image, balancing between trends and classic pieces. Head designer Patricia Clyne recently visited Pittsburgh and spoke with us about her time working for Oscar de la Renta and new pieces women absolutely must add to their wardrobes this spring.

Who influenced you to go into fashion?

I really started out being inspired by fabulous clothing in my parents’ closet. I would also go look at fashion magazines from a very young age, and go to thrift stores, watch old movies.

What was it like working with Oscar de la Renta?

Some of the most important things I learned from him are how he can make a woman feel so beautiful because his clothes are incredibly tailored yet feminine. Also, I gained an appreciation for color in working with him. Working with him has very much been a highlight of my career.

Where do you see fashion heading now?
The recession has made women think about what they purchase and why. We do make clothing that women want to purchase and our business has been strong. We always walk the line of ‘How new do you make it?’ And then you hear, ‘It’s got to be new, it’s got to mean something,’ and I think, more than ever, that it has to be fresh and there has to be a reason for a woman to buy it. It’s got be fabulous, and have quality, and somewhat of a long lifeline to it.

Hot trends:
The boyfriend jacket

“For me, it’s really about that great separate jacket that you can wear to work, wear with a pair of jeans, or dress it up. It’s very versatile, longer, just like putting on your boyfriend’s jacket!”

Skinny jeans
“This look is selling very well for us.”

Tunics and long T-shirts
“Everything has been kind of cropped short for a while, but I think both designers and customers want a new proportion. These pieces are great layering vehicles.”

Doncaster is sold by Paula Archinaco at Glow Tanning Retreat and Fitness, 412.344.0365. For more representatives, visit
